Why is that so many Jews were killed at Argentina during the last military dictatorship( 1976-1982)?

Why is that so many Jews were killed at Argentina during the last military dictatorship( 1976-1982)?
Jews comprise less than 1% of Argentinians , but 2000 out of 30,000 of those killed by the Argentine military government were Jews. How is this disproportion explained.Why is that all them were activists,Unionists,students etc? http://www.desaparecidos.org/arg/victimas/judios/lista.html List with the names of some of the "missing" Argentine Jews.

I would imagine because of antisemitism. They were blamed perhaps for the tyranny within their nation, even though it was not their fault.

let them killed.....

A number of reasons. Anti semitism which was present in the Argentinian armed forces. A sector of Peronism was anti semitic including the shielding by Peron of escaped Nazi War criminals. Dislike for people considered foreigners even though Jews have lived hundreds of years in Argentina. The high proportion of Jews, like Jacobo Timmerman who were involved in leftists and progressive struggles became a threat to the Fascists. Robbery of the posessions of those Jews who were considered rich. Lastly hostility to the Jewish community because of the perception that Israel was guilty of torturing and stealing from the Palestinians and other Muslims. It should be pointed out that many Jews considered themselves Argentine paytriots, were not Zionists and condemned the policies and practices of the Israeli Government.

Hey there! Congratulations on deciding to study abroad in Buenos Aires. It is a wonderful city! To be honest, I have never been to either university to actually visit, but you mentioned that you prefer one in the "main part" of Buenos Aires. To be quite honest with you, there is no "main part" of Buenos Aires. There is an area comprising the nicest/most populated neighborhoods, and then there are other neighborhoods that are more residential, not quite as pretty (but still awesome). Both Universidad de Palermo and Universidad del Salvador are located in what you might call those nice neighborhoods. Universidad del Salvador is located closer to downtown, and Universidad de Palermo is located in the Palermo/Recoleta area. For MY money, if I were deciding strictly based on location, I would go for Universidad de Palermo, because I far prefer that area to the downtown area. There is a ton to do, a zillions shops, restaurants, cinemas, clubs, etc (moreso than downtown, really), but it is also greener, with wider sidewalks, and just generally more pleasant (not to mention close to major parks). Downtown, while it has its charms, can be absurdly busy on the weekdays, is dirtier and grittier, has super narrow sidewalks that make the crowds even more of a pain, and stuff shuts down on weekends to a greater degree than it does in Palermo/Recoleta. That's not to say it's dead on weekends, it's just not as alive. Of course, there are many other factors to consider when choosing where to study, and your tastes may be completely different from mine, but that's my two cents on the locations of the two schools at least. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions you have about Buenos Aires. It's "my" city, and I love talking and helping introduce others to it! Best of luck to you, no matter what you decide.

What is the oddest place you have seen a Taiwanese person live?

What is the oddest place you have seen a Taiwanese person live?
I mean expat Taiwanese and not students or those on vacation. I have seen or heard of Taiwanese people living in Central/South American countries like Guatemala, Belize or Argentina. I also heard of some living in Idaho, Tennesee or Montana.

How can I hire a boat for long distance ocean travel?

How can I hire a boat for long distance ocean travel?
If I wanted to hire a boat and a captain (/crew?) to take four people from New York City, USA to Buenos Aires, Argentina, what would I do? Is it possible to charter trips of this magnitude? Failing that, how can four college students realize their dream by themselves?

Unless you have much more money then brains - hiring a crewed vessel would be very - very expensive. Even if you found a Captain with the right vessel (and time away from home) to make the trip - fact remains - you are talking of a near 8,000 mile voyage which (more then likely) will involve almost an entire year. (11 months anyway). While Island hopping through the Caribbean to Venezuela and then on down to Argentina would be a great voyage and could easily be made in 90 to 100 days. Problem is however, the return trip won't be so fast (from Argentina back to the Caribbean, and the timing will have to avoid the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 through November 30). So, you would need to depart NYC in early March and depart Argentina on the return about mid November. Now, it you think avoidance of hurricanes is no big deal - think again... as you will have to pass through that 1,000 mile stretch of the Atlantic where 99% of these storm systems develop... and only 1 in 10 develop and travel in the direction where we hear about it on the news - As if it is not headed for the US, you never hear about it, and most of them develop "out there" and remain "out there"... So, it is no big deal for the news in NYC - but it is if you need to boat through it at a speed of only about 8 or 9 mph. So, the best thing you can do is learn to sail... then buy or rent the boat... The link below can point you in the direction to help you get started on that... Great idea, great dream... hope you don't let it fade. Happy and Safe Boating, John

Ask Larry Ellison the Oracle CEO/Owner about storms and costs of a crew. Even though he won the current America's Cup, he's lost millions in his last boat which sank off the coast of Australia in a storm. He almost lost all of the crew too.
