How can I hire a boat for long distance ocean travel?

How can I hire a boat for long distance ocean travel?
If I wanted to hire a boat and a captain (/crew?) to take four people from New York City, USA to Buenos Aires, Argentina, what would I do? Is it possible to charter trips of this magnitude? Failing that, how can four college students realize their dream by themselves?

Unless you have much more money then brains - hiring a crewed vessel would be very - very expensive. Even if you found a Captain with the right vessel (and time away from home) to make the trip - fact remains - you are talking of a near 8,000 mile voyage which (more then likely) will involve almost an entire year. (11 months anyway). While Island hopping through the Caribbean to Venezuela and then on down to Argentina would be a great voyage and could easily be made in 90 to 100 days. Problem is however, the return trip won't be so fast (from Argentina back to the Caribbean, and the timing will have to avoid the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 through November 30). So, you would need to depart NYC in early March and depart Argentina on the return about mid November. Now, it you think avoidance of hurricanes is no big deal - think again... as you will have to pass through that 1,000 mile stretch of the Atlantic where 99% of these storm systems develop... and only 1 in 10 develop and travel in the direction where we hear about it on the news - As if it is not headed for the US, you never hear about it, and most of them develop "out there" and remain "out there"... So, it is no big deal for the news in NYC - but it is if you need to boat through it at a speed of only about 8 or 9 mph. So, the best thing you can do is learn to sail... then buy or rent the boat... The link below can point you in the direction to help you get started on that... Great idea, great dream... hope you don't let it fade. Happy and Safe Boating, John

Ask Larry Ellison the Oracle CEO/Owner about storms and costs of a crew. Even though he won the current America's Cup, he's lost millions in his last boat which sank off the coast of Australia in a storm. He almost lost all of the crew too.
