Are there any US colleges that have study abroad programs in Russia? Particularly for language students?

Are there any US colleges that have study abroad programs in Russia? Particularly for language students?
My dream is to become fluent in Russian. I fluently speak English, Spanish and I am learning French. I have a knack for languages, and I think the Russian language is absolutely beautiful. I am determined and am fascinated with the Cryllic alphabet. What colleges in the US (Any state, does NYU?) have study abroad programs where a student can live in Russia for immersion? If you don't know what I am talking about here is an example: My friend's sister who is majoring in Spanish is enrolled at UCLA and is undergoing a 6-month immersion program in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Stay organized! It seems really obvious, but so many small assignments can slip through the cracks when you don't keep track of them, and they add up. Also, having all of your notes in one place makes it easier to study for exams. Bulletpoint important dates and main ideas in the margins of your notes so you can remember what you wrote and where you wrote it, and do quick summaries at the end of the day to refresh your memory. Flashcards also helped me a lot. Good luck!

@ Nicole K.: I live near Houston!! Ok, back to the subject. 1. Study hard. 2. Work hard. 3. Stay focused. 4. Stay away from gangs and bad people.

How does tuition work for foreign students in countries where education is free for citizens?

How does tuition work for foreign students in countries where education is free for citizens?
Sorry to ask this here, but I thought maybe someone around this section would know something and I haven't succeeded in getting any answers anywhere else. I'm a bit confused and hoping someone can help me... basically, I'm a student in the US and I am starting to consider grad school options and I'm looking at universities in Latin America, namely, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba in Argentina. But I'm confused... apparently tuition is free for citizens of Argentina, but I can't figure out how to find out how much it is for foreigners.... how does international tuition generally work in countries where public unis are funded by the government? Is it also free for eligible foreigners (o_O)? This obviously isn't something I'm expecting, it's just that I've been able to find no information about money. I've scoured the UNdC website (and mind you, it's in Spanish, but that's not the problem here, I speak it well) and I haven't succeeded in finding anything... is non-resident tuition generally high (or higher than in the US) in Latin America? thanks in advance (also...keep your unhelpful paranoia about Argentina being "socialist" away, I'm just asking a pretty simple question) I do not care about Kenya or Harvard Law School or the "illegitimate" president. I asked a question about university in Argentina. Then again, I DID post it in politics so what should I expect.

I am more concerned with how a foreign student from Kenya manages to get into Harvard Law school for free, then illegitimately become President of the United States. I think Soros must have pulled some strings.
2 :
The university will set a fee for foreign students that you will be expected to pay from your own funds. Foreign students are not particularly common in Latin America (most international students go to Europe or North America) and there may be different fees for different degree programmes - obviously a course like physics is going to cost them more to run than a course like English, so you will probably have to email the university directly to find out what their fees are for international students and for the course you are interested in.. I would imagine fees will be cheaper than they are at American universities, but you will have to check with individual universities for exact amounts.

How come Students toss tantrum, demand release of detained illegal aliens claim no laws broken?

How come Students toss tantrum, demand release of detained illegal aliens claim no laws broken?
POMPANO BEACH - A Miami-Dade College student stood outside the Broward Transitional Center on North Powerline Road Monday afternoon. He has no desire to see the inside of the building. It's a detention center. They put people there until their immigration status is determined, or until they're deported. The student, Nahuel, entered the United States legally as a child, but his visa expired in 2002, and his family, he said, has waged a long and unsuccessful battle against the immigration bureaucracy to legalize their status. The rest of his family has been deported to Argentina. Nahuel, 19, who declined to give his last name, is the last one here, and that may end after his next hearing. Dozens of demonstrators organized by the Florida Immigrant Coalition protested Monday on behalf of students like Nahuel, who face deportation despite efforts to obtain college degrees and their professed desire to become U.S. citizens. "This place was set up for people who have committed no crime," said Maria Rodriguez, the coalition's executive director. "Do we want our tax dollars spent on housing and detaining people who have committed no crime?" Nahuel said he's trying to work within the law to correct his status. As the crowd around him chanted "Education, not deportation," Nahuel said he wanted to finish his education and take the oath of citizenship. "I want to make a living and contribute to society," he said. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/broward/pompano-beach/sfl-immigration-demo-bn101909,0,2492803.story

3 :
There is a reason their long battle against immigration bureaucracy was unsuccessful. I wonder why those reasons were not listed, why the reporter just went for the bleeding heart angle. The family is at fault for not working to fix their status BEFORE it expired. They made the mistake, not my fault and at 19 Nahuel also knew better. They believe that because they came legally they should be able to stay even through they failed to renew their status on time.
4 :
Ignorant of the law? I doubt it and ignorance of the law is no excuse anyhow. This person knew his visa expired and when it did, he became an illegal alien. No ones fault but his own. Deport. The demonstrators are being used by the F. I. Coalition, more of the brain-washed young people from our schools.

Long distance relationship?

Long distance relationship?
I am 18 and i just graduated high school 3 months ago. I dated a foreign exchange student for 10 months before she left. In August I went to Argentina and I made a lot of friends and I loved every minute with her. Now I am suppose to leave for the Navy in October but I'm thinking I should say forget it and go to Argentina and stay with friends who have offered, and get a job because i speak english and be with her for an uncertain amount of time. Is this worth it. I am completely in love.

I advise you to do you and get your life on track and then if she loves you she will be waiting on you. Good Luck

For each of the following, state whether it creates a demand for or a supply of U.S dollars: A) A japanese automobile firm builds an assembly plant in Ohio. B) A U.S importer purchases a shipload of Saudi Arabia oil C) A U.S student spends a summer in england studying in Oxford D) a french exporter ships products to Argentina using American freighter E) Currrency traders feel that the value of the U.S dollar will fall in the near future and act on that feeling

These situations all refer to the foreign exchange market. The basic concept that applies is that goods and services are paid for in the currency of the supplier, so the buyer exchanges his home currency for the currency that the goods and services are traded in. The buyer thus sells, or supplies, his country's currency and buys, or demands, the currency of the seller. With that in mind, here are the answers: A) Demand for US dollars B) Supply C) Supply D) Demand E) Supply For E, the currency traders will sell US dollars now, before the value decreases, and buy them later, after the value decreases.
2 :
A) demand for USD. this is an example of Foreign direct investment. The Japanese firm demand US dollar in order to invest in US. B) Supply for USD. US importer will offer USD to purchase Saudi Arabia Riyal before he/she can purchase the oil. C) Supply for USD. Same concept as in (B) US student offer USD to purchase British Pound before study in UK. D) Demand for USD. French exporter demand USD before he/she can purchase the service of American freighter. E) Supply for USD. Currency trader that feel value of USD will fall will sell USD in foreign exchange market. Hope that helps! sportandstock.blogspot.com

Are you worry about the Swine Flu?

Are you worry about the Swine Flu?
World health organization has declared Swine Flu, as global pandemic and has warn it's 'unstoppable. now this being the worse news you had heard in a long time. with you stop being foolish. listen to what they are telling you before it's to late. don't you realize what is happening around the world. the 4 horsemen has been unleash here on earth Yet only 56% of americans aren't worry about the Swine Flu, isn't this foolish of them The UN's top health official has opened a forum in Mexico on combating swine flu by saying that the spread of the virus worldwide is now unstoppable. World Health Organization head Margaret Chan added that the holding of the meeting in Cancun showed confidence in Mexico, which has been hard hit. The WHO says most H1N1 cases are mild, with many people recovering unaided. As the summit opened, the UK alone was projecting more than 100,000 new cases of H1N1 a day by the end of the summer. While Mexico in the northern hemisphere has seen swine flu cases decreased, the peak of the flu season is approaching in South America and some areas have declared a public health emergency. Paraguay has reported its first fatality, while in Central America El Salvador has also recorded its first swine flu death. 'Mild symptoms' "As we see today, with well over 100 countries reporting cases, once a fully fit pandemic virus emerges, its further international spread is unstoppable," Dr Chan said in her opening remarks. She stressed that the overwhelming majority of patients experienced mild symptoms and made a full recovery within a week, often in the absence of any form of medical treatment. The exceptions, she said, were pregnant women and people with underlying health problems, who were at higher risk from complications from the virus and should be monitored if they fell ill. "For a pandemic of moderate severity, this is one of our greatest challenges: helping people to understand when they do not need to worry, and when they do need to seek urgent care," Dr Chan said. Turning to the summit venue, the WHO chief added: "Mexico is a safe, as well as a beautiful and warmly gracious, place to visit." Leaders and experts from 50 countries are in Cancun for the two-day meeting to discuss strategies for combating the virus. It has been more than two months since the initial alert over swine flu. Since then, the H1N1 virus has entered more than 100 countries, infected more than 70,000 people and killed more than 300 worldwide. Authorities across South America are becoming increasingly concerned as the peak flu season approaches. Schools across Argentina have sent students home and pregnant women have been told they can take two weeks off work to avoid contracting the virus. It is hoped the Cancun meeting will address many of the issues that might help slow the spread of swine flu but, our correspondent adds, many people are concerned that an effective vaccine has still not been developed http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8130196.stm

It's just flu, people. Stop making mountains out of molehills. Typically, in a year's normal two flu seasons (one per hemisphere), there are between three and five million cases of severe illness and up to 500,000 deaths worldwide. Then people see 300 dead from Swine Flu and scream that the sky is falling, lol.
4 :
No, because every year thousands of people die in the UK of 'normal' flu, and nobody bats an eyelid. So far, about 35 people have died of swine flu, and 30 of them were old and weak anyway. So I'm not worried in the slightest.
5 :
We're way overdue for a high casualty epidemic, I'm cheering it on, hoping it does it's work well.
6 :
I know several people that have had it and they're all fine. It's not any worse than any other flu, it's only concerning because there is no vaccine (yet) so people who are normally at risk from regular flu are unprotected. It's not the end of the world, princess, so dry your eyes.
7 :
Considering that millions of people have already got or had swine flu and the vast majority recover, the death rate is not significantly higher than normal seasonal flu. Scaremongering doesn't help anyone.
8 :
Swine flu is just a money spinner for the big pharma companies, People die of seasonal flu every year. Often the vaccine causes more problems that the virus. Its all just hype to get people to panic & accept forced vaccinations which have bypassed all safety protocols & for which the manufacturers are immune from prosecution should anyone suffer death or injury from these vaccines.
9 :
THE SKY IS FALLING .... THE SKY IS FALLING .... You do realize 36,000 people died in the US and hundred of thousands are infected every year due to the "regular" flu ... less then 500 people had died of this one so far ... Wash your hands ... cover your mouth ... our moms were right you should really be asking yourself ... "Why do people need something to fear..." The pharmaceutical companies are the ones fueling this fire ... take a step back and realize you are being manipulated ...

1 :
(a) Demand for USD. They cannot invest their Yen in our country, instead they will have to buy dollars in the foreign exchange market to directly invest in the US by establishing an assembly plant here. (b) Supply for USD; they will first have to purchase the currency Saudi Arabia uses before they can purchase the oil they are selling. (c) Supply for USD; the use of the British Pound is necesary in the UK therefore the USD will not be of any assistance to the student studying in Oxford for a summer. (d) Demand for USD; The demand for the dollar will increase before they use the service of the American freighter to ship their products to Argentina. (e) Supply for USD; If those trading currency feel as if its value is going to depreciate, or fall, they're going to be inclined to sell the US dollar. Also, if you're having problems understanding these concepts (also with your other questions about exchange rates) just think in every situation: who wants the money? Like for example in (a), if a Japanese auto firm is building an assembly plant in the United States, is the demand for the Yen going to increase? No - simply because the US doesn't accept the Yen as currency. However, the demand for the dollar will increase because those have to be purchased before the Japanese auto firm can invest and build their assembly plant here.

Chances are good. I'm not sure what/where JHU is or how competitive it is. Do you have anything published? Top schools might consider that. You might want to hang on to get some full-time, post-degree work experience, but on the other hand you could apply and if you are not accepted use that time to get some full-time work experience. Also, if you are not accepted into the PhD program, consider getting a master's degree first. Good luck on the GREs.
2 :
unlikely. Probably highly unlikely
3 :
I'm assuming JHU is Johns Hopkins. If so, you are certaintly qualified for any of those programs. Good luck.
4 :
In my opinion, everything so far looks great. Your recs, however should be much better than "good;" they should be great. And again, in my opinion, your GREs will be a major factor in determining both admission and awards (fellowships, assistantships). Don't worry about your quantitative scores, but your verbal and writing scores should be absolutely excellent (over 750 and at least a 5). Best wishes to you!

Is Mexico really that dangerous?

Is Mexico really that dangerous?
i'm American and the only thing me (and many other Americans) know about Mexico are the drugs and such. Like from movies and also political issues. Is Mexico REALLY as dangerous as it seems? I always see stories on how immigrants are trying to escape and risk their lives even! The entire country can't be that bad right? Are there any good parts of Mexico that maybe a student living abroad should go to or should Mexico just be avoided in favor of Spain, Argentina and other Spanish speaking countries? Can someone give me some insight on what Mexico is really like? Also I'm black, I heard something about how blacks and Mexicans supposedly don't get along for whatever reason.

Heres a good tip or when going to mexico. NEVER EVER drive around in a fancy new looking car because cartels will follow you and try to take it from you at all costs. Also, when going thru mexico city wrap a rubber band around your wallet and put it in your front poket because there are a LOT of pick pockets. Dont wear any jewelry or fancy clothing as this would make you an easy target. In addition, NEVER ever bash the cartels while in mexico cause you never know who u are talking to as they could possibly be a cartel and kill u for insulting them which has hapenned to many people. I would avoid mexico for now because its just way too dangerous with it being considered the #1 country in holding people hostage and then killing them even tho u paid the ransom!
2 :
Mexico is not really that dangerous depending on where you are. The struggle for control of drug sales to the US and Canada is the problem. Without the sensational demand for illegal drugs by those countries and the illegal sale of weapons to this country ( Mexico has gun control) this problem would not be "really that dangerous" Locals are trying to cross the boarder illegally for jobs and these locals for the most part are uneducated farm laborers. If Americans are so upset with illegals entering then why do they permit American farmers and others to hire these people? You see both problems could be solved on the north side of the boarder. Stiffer penalties and jail time for the smallest drug user to the person hiring illegals. Why do states offer drivers license to illegals, why do banks offer accounts to illegals, why do the same people who blast the illegals buy and support businesses who hire illegals. Would an American want to do farm labor for about 10 dollars a day? Would you be willing to pay 3 or 4 times higher prices for most fruits and vegetables? We live in the southern part of Mexico and we feel safe and are safe. I have friends and family living through out Mexico and they feel safe. Except for the northern most boarder towns and the state of Guerrero the rest of Mexico is safe. As long as you are not looking to buy illegal drugs or in the areas where illegal drug sale are happening. The sale of drugs down here is different than in the states. Here one gang or cartel if you like has the control over an area to sell drugs. Similar to the old days with the Mafia throughout the US and Canada. Here you can not buy large quantities of drugs unless you are connected or have a in. Drugs first are sold out of a house that is usually fortified in one way or another, they are sold out of an establishment that is controlled by the gang and the other two ways are by taxi, private cars, motorcycles that you call a number and they will meet you at a street corner, and the last on the street. All these people who sell are in a gang or a cartel and they can not go outside this gang this is where a big problem happens, selling outside the gang, which will result in death, selling from a house in a rival gangs territory will result in violence. The reports that you hear about people having their heads cut off or hearts cut out are results of this.Police being killed or ambushed are results of arrests by honest officers or the ones on the take asking for more money. As far as being black. I have lived here for over 12 years full time and first came here 26 years ago and I have never seen, heard or wittiness any prejudices towards blacks or for that matter any other ethnic, religious or sexual orientation groups. Mexicans in large are a peaceful people. Hope this helped.

Im mexican but i live in Mexico City and here theres violence but only in some specific streets (colonias ) in the north theres real terror for citizens from Monterrey , Tijuana and CD Juarez , every day some one is decapited or killed here is the video of the last shooting in Tepic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nECOqEXCWhU
4 :
Mexico is very dangerous. The highly populated areas are dangerous because highly populated areas anywhere in the world are dangerous due to crime. Also the drug gangs, unable to make headway against the government, have turned their guns on innocent civilians. The not so highly populated areas are dangerous because you are likely to be robbed, raped or killed for fun in alonely place. Mexico City is curiously very safe crimewise for such a large city, but one day there is going to a devastating earthquake there. Blacks in Mexico = no special problems between blacks and other races in Mexico. Non black Mexicans are fascinated by foreign blacks. Spain = is fine Argentina = less friendly than Mexicans, in my experience more racist than Mexicans and Spaniards

ONLY THE NORTH PARTS ARE DANGEROUSE I KNOW THAT MY DAD IS IN THE MEXICAN NAVY . i live in veracruz mexico and theres nothing here oh and . mexican is a nationality . my mom is german im light skineed my best friend is mexican too and is black

Most of mexico is quite safe. there are over a million Ameicans and Canadians living here...would they be here if they felt threatened? No. Come to the state of Veracruz...to the capital city of Xalapa. We have a fantastic university with thousands of international students. Racism is simply not a problem here. Many people in the state are descendants of black, indigenous , and Spanish ancestors. Of course there is crime at times, happens everywhere in the world, but Xalapa is entirely different than places like Juarez. It is a very international city with many students, professors, and especially musicians from all over the world. it is a city of culture, art, music, and many universities. The University has a special language school, if you need that. It is a charming city...and the whole state has many interesting places to visit. It is just a bit over an hour from hundreds of miles of open , gorgeous beach, and an hour and a half from the legendary city of Veracruz, with its harbor and European style Centro Historico. Xalapa has a far better climate than the coastal areas...not hot and humid, but you can go to the beach in the morning and return to our delightful mountain climate in the afternoon. There are several hundred Americans in and around Xalapa, mostly professionals or retired. There are also many people from all over the world living and working in Xalapa at the University, in the Symphony orchestra, and in other professions. You would love Xalapa, Veracruz.
7 :
You are correct, the entire country is not bad. There are some areas along the Texas/US border that seem to have lingering problems. Despite the bad publicity, Tijuana and northern Baja has actually recovered nicely. While there are isolated incidents they are strictly drug cartel member vs. drug cartel member... not innocent residents and tourists. If you are considering studying in Mexico, consider the colonial cities (Google Mexico Colonial Cities) where there is a great history and architecture. Remember that Mexico was conquered by both Spain and France... so you will see many interesting cathedrals and public buildings. Obviously you need to research those cities where a university campus also exists. Frankly, I don't think you will find any area in Mexico where violence is occuring that also has large universities and is a colonial city. Costs of transportation, housing, tuition, etc., will no doubt be cheaper in Mexico than going to Europe. I live in Mexico and have travelled a little throughout... I am constantly amazed at how nice the culture is once you get away from the border areas. I live in a border region and have made some wonderful friends and acquaintances... and it only gets better once away from the touristy and commercial hub-bub. As for being black... I don't think there have been a lot of blacks migrate to Mexico, so we don't see many. But I don't hear a lot of racism or unpleasantness from my Mexican friends on the subject either. That being the case, you may have a perfect opportunity to blast some stereotypes.
8 :
I cannot speak from personal experience about the current security situation because the last time I was in Mexico was back in 2008. So, I'll answer your question based on my experiences during the five times I had visited the country up until that year. Now, did it seem like people worried more about personal security in Mexico than what I was used to in the United States? Yes, I admit it did. However, while I admit there were some crime issues in Mexico I did NOT find it to be the absolute chaos you might think if you only take in what you see on the news and in the movies. Never have I been the victim of any type of crime--even minor--while travelling or studying abroad in Mexico. Mexico and the United States are countries that face serious challenges that create issues like drug trafficking and illegal immigration. These are BILATERAL issues that will require the effort of both the United States and Mexico to solve. (@ Playa Dude: You are certainly right that Mexico is not the only country to blame for these problems. However, the United States is not the only country to blame either. So no, the solution CANNOT be simply solved on the northern side of the border as if it were all the U.S.'s fault. The responsibility is SHARED between both countries and the problems must be attacked in both countries. To fight the drug war you need both reduced consumption in the United States as well as a continued effort to fight organized crime in Mexico. To reduce illegal immigration you need both better enforcement and/or immigration reform in the United States as well as the creation of more job opportunities in Mexico. I understand you're reacting against those who wrongfully put all the blame on your country, but please just be sure you aren't responding in kind and turning around and doing the same to mine, ok?) Now, back to the main question at hand. There are many wonderful places to visit in Mexico. I spent a lot of time in Cuernavaca in language school and think it has the best of both worlds. You can study in a nice smaller city but be close enough to visit all of the cultural sites in Mexico City. You cannot miss the Historical Centre, Metropolitan Cathedral, Templo Mayor, Archaeology Museum, Palace of Fine Arts, and the Teotihuacan pyramids outside the city. The second largest city in Mexico, Guadalajara, is also a great destination. This city seems to offer a beautiful mix of both modern and traditional Mexico. Go see the Plaza Tapatia and the Teatro Degollado, and don't forget to see Tlaquepaque. Puebla is also a great city to see with beautiful colonial architecture and the battle sites of the original "Cinco de Mayo". Meanwhile, Oaxaca has a great mix of both city architecture and amerindian ruins nearby. There is something else you should know about Mexico. Just like its violence is exaggerated, so is its poverty. Make no mistake--not every neighborhood in Mexico is as "third world" as people think it is and not all Mexicans are poor. The reality is that it is a country of "haves" and "have nots" and you might be surprised at just how well some people there live. Lastly, I do not mean to discourage you from going to Spain or Argentina (I would love to visit those countries myself someday), but I think there is a good reason to prioritize Mexico. The argument for why it is so important to learn about Mexico is given quite eloquently by the author Alan Riding in his book "Distant Neighbors" (or Vecinos Distantes in Spanish). He makes a thought provoking point in his prologue that there are probably no two neighboring countries in the world that are more different and understand each other so little as the U.S. and Mexico. Neither this author, any other, or I need to remind you how integrated Mexico is with the United States by immigration and trade. Because of this, understanding Mexican culture is more directly relevant to your personal and professional life. Going on a trip to see what the country is really like could be a real eye opener and gaining that understanding could be quite useful to you.

Where can I get all the songs from any children's musical?

Where can I get all the songs from any children's musical?
The English department at the school where I work is in charge of the end-of-year "concert", which, since it is a bilingual school (I live in Argentina), has to be "excellent", for the parents to be proud of their children's English (though singing someone else's songs, previously learned by heart, is not the way of showing off anything). Any children's musical would do, but it has to have at least 8 songs (for all the groups of students to participate).

Do I fit the description of descendant?

Do I fit the description of descendant?
I want to apply to the Hispanic Scholarship fund but there requirement is as follows: " You or your family (parents, grandparents) must be descended from at least one of the following countries: Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Cuba, Puerto Rico, or the Dominican Republic. Students from Brazil are eligible to apply. However, students from Belize, Guyana, Portugal, Suriname and French Guiana are not considered Hispanic. " My mother is from Montevideo, Uruguay, born and raised. Her parents are from Spain and moved to Uruguay. But I was born in the U.S. and am half Italian and half Spanish (dad is Italian). Since my mother is 100% Hispanic and I am only half, do I still qualify as a descendant of Uruguay?

Unlike power connectors, most computers use the same technology for web cameras. Most use USB these days. Assuming the computer you are using there isn't over 10 years old, you shouldn't have any problems as long as you bring the software with you. As for your second question, it depends on the cafe. Some yes, some no. If you're using your own laptop, then of course you can.
3 :
Nobody is going to allow you to insall the webcam software on a machine in an internet cafe. If they allowed users to install anything, all their machines would be trashed in a day.

What does it mean when you keep dreaming a friend is mad at you?

What does it mean when you keep dreaming a friend is mad at you?
I had an exchange student visit from argentina, we became really good friends and now im going to visit her in 2 weeks. The past 2 nights i have dreamed of the day she left to go back home and in both dreams she told me not to come with her to drop her off at the airport because she thought i would be usless. She left with her argentina friend and went home. In both dreams she was mad at me when she left. I know this sounds SOOO weird but this dream has repeated its self twice so i wanted to know if their was a deeper meaning behind it.

Build up your confidence, because you know you'll be fine. You are the teacher, and you are supposed to teach them a language so they will most likely respect you because of what you are doing to help them learn english.
2 :
Remember that you are there to teach them. You have so much information to share with your students, and (here is when you start praising yourself) nobody else can do as good a job as you can. When you become that determined, it shouldn't be too hard to just start talking - once you start, you probably won't stop, especially when you know your students better and begin to form friendships with them.
3 :
Draft a course curriculum and don't deviate from it. Establish authority without seeming like a drill sargeant. Apply the K.I.S.S. principle
4 :
Act. Pretend you are a great teacher. Work as if you were a actor playing your part. And after a few classes it will become easy. The first classes you will be an actor playing a role. Good luck.
5 :
You will do just fine. Your first day is also their first day meeting you and they will be nervous as well. The key is to try not to show just how nervous you really are. Show confidence in yourself and your knowledge and if something does happen like you mispronounce a word or trip over yourself, laugh it off, have a sense of humor about it. After you get to know the kids a little bit you will be great. Good luck, I hope you have a very wonderful and rewarding carreer ahead of you.
6 :
Use humor to amuse the class and yourself. Don't stay in one spot. Move around like its your own living room. Be comfortable. When you get a question you don't know say "I DON'T KNOW ! but I will find out." When you try to BS your way through you will fail. When time permits keep your mind moving 5 min. ahead of where you currently are. Use class exercises to give yourself a bit of a break. Above all show your PASSION for the subject. I have been teaching for 13 years to engineers, industrial hygienists, govt. people and inspectors. I am the only instructor so these folks have to listen to me for 8 hours a day. In some cases for an entire week. If the above suggestions will work for me and them they will work for you. (BTW.... I never finished high school SSShhhhhhhhhhh. The reason I get away with it is because I KNOW ! my subject matter)

Are ISIC cards worth the discount?

Are ISIC cards worth the discount?
I'm going into 3rd year and I have an ISIC which discounts the train tickets back home on holiday. I want to go to Argentina in the near future and I know ISIC cards carry discounts for a lot of stuff, however I'll only be a student until the end of 4th year. So I would have to plan the trip to go next summer to take advantage of the student discounts. It's kind of an odd question, I know, but how worthwhile is the discount and should I travel while I'm still a university student?
Other - Europe - 1 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
The discounts are because people still at college have less funds - so you have to think - when you'll work, you might have more money (but less time for travel!), but you will not receive those benefits. The thing is: most places I have visited to, as a student, looked at my regular student ID (the one my university used for the library, etc.) and did not care much for ISIC or other cards - if I got a discount, a student's ID (or a passport stating that my age was less than 26) was sufficient; and if not, those cards wouldn't help me, too.

Smaller, less touristy cities in Spain to study abroad?

Smaller, less touristy cities in Spain to study abroad?
Hi, I'm a Spanish major and I'm really interested in studying abroad in either Argentina or Spain. I feel like I would have less contact with English in Argentina, as there are many students that go to study in Spain. However, I would still love to go to Spain to learn Spanish, so where are some of the "better" places to study abroad-i.e. less touristy, greater ratio of Spanish speakers/English speakers.
Studying Abroad - 4 Answers

Well it really depends where you go in Spain or Argentina. Madrid, Barcelona and Buenos Aires would def. have a higher ratio of English speakers then Sevilla. In terms of education, you can find better universities in rural areas in Spain than in less touristy cities in Argentina. Plus, in Spain, you would be so close to all of Europe and can travel around more. You will have more of a student life, with students from all over Europe barely speaking English, so you would all be forced to use Spanish to communicate, it's more fun. You can check out Salamanca university, it's reeally good and the locals don't speak a lot of English so you won't have to worry about that. Good luck!
2 :
Granada, Spain. It's in southern Spain and is absolutely gorgeous! It is located at the base of a mountain and is near an old Moorish fortress, La Alhambra. There is so much history in the city. There is flamenco, gitanos, great food and music, so much culture. The people are so friendly. Plus, there are a ton of study abroad programs there. There is a major University there. There will be a lot to do, it is close to many other cities if you want to travel around on weekends. You will be able to find housing. You will be able to connect with a lot of students who would want to practice English with you and you could learn Spanish. You can take day trips up into mountain towns like Monachil. You can go visit the ocean and some castles, only one hour away by bus. You can catch cheap flights to Madrid or the north, depending on how long you will be there. You can get down to Malaga and see some things, or drive west towards Jerez de la Frontera and see some white pueblos on the hills - very picturesque. You will never want to leave Granada. You can eat churros con chocolate on the plaza below the Catedral and do some people-watching while you practice Spanish with a tutor. In the source section I'm putting several links to study abroad programs in Granada. Good luck and have fun!!

I participated in a fabulous program, called HomeStay Spain in SPAIN. After speaking with other kids in the group who had participated in other exchange programs abroad we decided this was the best! If you are interested in a lifestyle immersion experience and willing to learn about Spanish Culture and Lifestyle, this is the most amazing program available. The beautiful and safe town of Santander is known for its cultural refinement, and an atmosphere typical of old Spain. It is so much fun!!! And we learned so much!!!! It was so enriching. I LOVED IT!!! Both my sister and I participated different summers and we had a blast! We made so many good friends we still keep in touch with! The program is really well planned out and people are lovely! Many host families have teens. They even allow you to come with a friend to stay in same host family home or in a different home. And if you sign up early they allow you to choose from the available host families for a perfect fit. Check their website www.beautifulspain.com Before deciding among different programs I had a chance to speak with some contacts that had participated in this program and my parents did as well. Everyone spoke wonders about this program, the host families and the local director Nuria, who is such a nice lady,... She is usually in the US at this time of the year, so that means that you may be able to talk to her on the phone once you contact them through their web site. This program is considered the most complete exposure to a foreign country because as they say it is true that it combines CLASSES (art, debate, street talk, folklore, DANCING classes, among others) with FUN and EXCITING ACTIVITIES such as Latin Dance Classes, Bullfight, Boat Excursion, etc…, FULL DAY OUTINGS to places of historical and cultural interest such as prehistoric Altamira Caves, Guggenheim Museum, Roman Ruins, "Capricho de Gaudi", Roman Route Hiking adventure, etc... are also ALL INCLUDED IN THE PRICE while living with a local, loving and carefully selected HOST FAMILY. I know this program allows you to choose from several host families (the type of things this program does, no other program would ever) in order for everyone to be happy. Santander, if you dont know is located on a beautiful bay and flanked by numerous beaches. It is a very small, off the beaten path, town in the north of Spain. Fortunately, it is still very unknown by foreign visitors and therefore not as touristy as other cities in Spain. Argentina is packed with US students and so are the big and touristy cities in Spain such as Seville, Barcelona, Madrid etc....

Being close to the embassy is not really that big of a deal. I've lived in Cordoba Argentina and needed to go to the embassy one time in five years. It's really more about what life style you would like. Think of Buenos Aires as NYC and Cordoba as Austin, TX. Where would you be happiest?

i pick Argentina over Brazil, because Argentina is way better than Brazil, the match will be tough though, but i think Argentina will win the Copa America. and since I born and grew up in Mexico, i guess that makes me a true Mexican, and please get over it, they won the semis against Mexico, and that's it, it hurts so bad, but that's it, period.

I really want to speak Spanish fluently but I don't know what it's like in Argentina. Do they make fun of you for trying to speak? Is it a nice environment for college students? Can I make friends easily in Buenos Aires?

I haven't been to Argentina, but when I was in college a few years ago I did a study-abroad in Ecuador. I had never left the country before and I was quite nervous before going. I can tell you some things that helped me prepare. My university had a great international studies office. They held meetings so that any of us who were going to the same place would have a chance to meet before going there, so we would at leasts know a few people. They also arranged for us to meet people who had come back from the same place we were going. They could give us some clues as to what to expect when we arrived. They also arranged for us to stay with a host family and gave us the contact information for that family so we could call them before we went down. I have now done a study abroad in Ecuador, returned a year later for a vacation to spend time with friends, spent a week in Guatemala on a service trip, spent a week in Puerto Rico on vacation and spent two weeks in El Salvador on a mission trip. Each different place I have been has shown me that when you show that you are trying to learn their language, everyone is very happy to help you. I never experienced anyone making fun of me, but it did annoy me when people would assume that I did not speak Spanish, so they would insist on speaking to me in English, even though I could speak Spanish better than they could speak English! If your housing is arranged through the university, be sure that you are happy with the arrangements. If you do not get along well with the family, ask for it to be changed. I disliked my host family, but I felt awkward asking to be moved, especially since my host mother was good friends with the program coordinator at the university, but I wish I had spoken up first thing. I would have had an even better experience than I had to begin with! Also, make sure that you spend time with the Argentine students! There were so many American's at my university that we fell into a habit of hanging out with each other and speaking English rather than spending time with the Ecuadorans and practicing Spanish. So, my advice would be: use the resources at your disposal -- at your school and once in country. Also, make the most of your trip. Try not to speak English much, including with other Americans. When classmates always see you speaking English, they will hesitate to speak to you in Spanish. Also -- travel, travel, travel. I barely spent any weekends in Quito because I was constantly out seeing other parts of the country. Buen viaje!

Rosa T. has provided you with excellent information, advise, and experience ! As international travelers, my son and I would suggest, also, there are some localities needing " professors" to teach CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH !!!! My son ( several years ago, ) went to the University of St. Petersburg, Russa, to acquire his major in music. He was asked to teach, 2 hours per day, 2 days per week, ( I.E. something like a professor) Conversational English. He accepted the challenge, and within 2 weeks, he had his own apartment and telephone !!!! At that time, apartments and telephones requests were placed onto a waiting list, amounting to about 5 years of waiting !!!! Just an Idea. There are many other opportunities around. Good Luck to each and every one of you!!!!! GO FOR THE GUSTO, THIS IS THE GREATEST TIME, IN YOUR LIVES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Uncle Wil

Is it love or infactuation? Or an idle whim?

Is it love or infactuation? Or an idle whim?
Married 35 year old, free spirit. Been with the same guy for the last 10 years, we have a very erratic relationship, it is either really good, or really shitty.. No major in between. I love him yes, we have a lot of history and can have a lot of fun together, not so much recently. Years ago when I was teaching I met a student from Argentina 8 years youunger. We hit it off, had fun hung out etc strong attraction, major flirtation. One time before I was getitng married, we ended up kissing very intensley for a while, I pushed away, feeling such guilt to go further, knowing I loved my husband and respected him, so I stopped. He told me before the wedding see ya, distanced for a long while. I missed him, our talks, friendship, banter. We are chatting again about once a month, I have strong feelings when I get off the phone, but think this is silly it is just a fantasy, you can't be in love with two guys, but man I miss hm, I dream about him a lot, he asks me to visit etc.. I don't know what to do, as I feel the energy between us is undeniable..
